In the time where water scarcity is norm of the urban areas, the lush green gardens and lawns of this Thane society will surprise everyone.
The credit goes to the sewage treatment plant installed and maintained by the society residents. This society complex comprising of 420 residential flats, had installed a full-fledged sewage treatment plant (STP) in 2009 after Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) had ordered larger societies to install one.
For the past seven years, close to 150-250 cubic metre of sewage water from all the 420 flats is being treated in the conventional treatment plant.
“The plant was constructed by the builder as per MPCB rules and the residents took up maintenance and operation of the plant. The output water quality is in line with discharge norms stipulated by the board and is suitable for watering the main garden and society lawns,” informed Mr Khanna, a resident of Kores, who along with several members oversees the upkeep of the plant.
