India plants 50 million trees in 24 hours to fight climate change

Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state has recently set a new world record by planting a whopping 50 million tree saplings in a commitment to reforest India.

The 24-hour event took place on July 11th involving more than 800,000 people from the state taking part in planting of trees.

The previous record is held by Pakistan, which planted 847,275 trees in a day in 2013.

The planting of trees is a step towards India’s commitment at Paris Climate Conference in December 2015. India had agreed to spend $6 billion to reforest 12 percent of its land, the country has lost is forest cover in a rapid manner over the past few years.
