Corporate excess feeds the needy

The technology companies spread across the silicon city of India arrange for food to be served to their large work force inside their premises.

Swabhimaan , a Bengaluru based NGO involves in the collection of the food items leftover by the IT employees and then distributes it among the needy people of the city.

On a daily basis a mini tempo from NGO visits a handful of IT companies at afternoon to collect leftover food items, which otherwise reaches the garbage as waste.

The day’s food items contain typical south Indian dishes ranging from rice, dal, vegetables, sambar and chapatti.

Over a period of time, the NGO headed by Mr. Venkatraman Iyer distributes food to the needy on weekdays. The noble thought came to the mind of Iyer, when his friends informed him that an IT company was looking for ways to dispose the excess or leftover food.

The IT firm employing around 1100 people was unable to manage the leftover that could be sufficient for feeding 200 people.

Through the arrangement with NGO, the IT firm has not only solved the excess food going waste but also feed many needy.

The dwellers, provided with laminated cards, come and take food home from the distribution point.
